Rev. Rul. 59-150

The use of a slurry for clarifying wine which is prepared by adding one pound of Bentonite (Wyoming clay) to not more than two gallons of water, is considered as being consistent with good commercial practice under section 240.524 of the Federal Wine Regulations, provided the total quantity of water so used does not exceed one percent of the volume of wine treated. Winemakers may use Bentonite slurry in clarification of wines within these limitations, on receiving the approval of the Assistant Regional Commissioner, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax, after filing appropriate notice pursuant to section 240.530 of the regulations.
