Tax Analysts Launches Fellowship With American Bar Association Tax Section

May 10, 2022

Today Tax Analysts is proud to announce a partnership with the American Bar Association Section of Taxation to launch the Tax Analysts Public Service Fellowship. This new two-year fellowship offers practicing tax attorneys the opportunity to work in public interest tax law with a public interest nonprofit organization or government entity (the sponsoring organization). For the inaugural year of this fellowship, the sponsoring organization will be La Posada Tax Clinic in Twin Falls, Idaho.

“Everything we do at Tax Analysts is viewed through the lens of our mission to educate taxpayers, policymakers, and tax practitioners, to foster a debate on tax policy, and to increase transparency in tax policy,” said President and CEO Cara Griffith. “Over the past two years, we launched additional resources that are freely available to all, including the Taxing Issues webinar series and our free research tool, Tax Notes Research. These efforts have laid the groundwork for this fellowship, which we believe is the next logical step toward achieving our mission.”

This fellowship builds on the success of the ABA tax section’s Christine A. Brunswick Public Service Fellowship, which has placed recent law school graduates in public interest tax organizations throughout the United States since 2008.

“The ABA Tax Section is thrilled to collaborate with Tax Analysts on this unique fellowship designed to attract more experienced attorneys to a career in tax-related public service,” said Julie Divola, chair of the ABA Section of Taxation. “The complexity of the tax laws, increased use of the tax system to deliver social services, and underfunded and overwhelmed taxing authorities make representation of vulnerable taxpayers more important than ever. The Tax Analyst Public Service Fellowship will help bring equal access to tax justice to diverse geographic regions, particularly rural areas where such assistance may be needed most.”

Future applicants for the Tax Analysts Public Service Fellowship will be expected to identify and secure a position with a sponsoring organization before applying.

“This partnership is an exciting opportunity to grow the scope of Tax Analysts’ mission work,” said Ameek Ashok Ponda, chair of the Tax Analysts board of directors. “As proud as we are of our other initiatives, this fellowship gives us the chance to help tax practitioners make a real difference with the low-income taxpayer clinics who need their services.”

The tax section has opened the application period for the inaugural fellow; applications are due July 29, 2022. Applicants should have three to five years of experience practicing tax law and be willing to relocate to Twin Falls, Idaho. For more information and to apply, visit the fellowship page.
