The use of ion exchange resin `Amberlite XE-168,' in a continuous column process, to treat red, white and rose' table wines, dessert wines, champagne, and vermouth base wines to reduce the natural acidity and to remove excess color is considered as being consistent with good commercial practice, within the meaning of section 240.524 of the Wine Regulations, provided the wines so treated have a color of not less than 0.6 Lovibond in a one-half inch cell.
The restrictions imposed on non-ionic and conditioning resins by section 240.1051 of the regulations are applicable with respect to the use of the resin for removing excess color. Also the restrictions imposed by the regulations on anion exchange resins are applicable with respect to the use of the resin for reducing the natural acidity of the wines. Applications filed by winemakers for the use of the resin, as authorized herein, may be approved by Assistant Regional Commissioners, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax, pursuant to the provisions of section 240.1052 of the regulations.
