Agents from the IRS Criminal Investigation division swooped down on the Houston office of national tax consulting firm Alliantgroup LP May 20.
“We are currently conducting a court-authorized operation,” said Christian Venhuizen, spokesman for the CI field office in Houston.
Alliantgroup didn’t respond to a request for comment by press time. However, a statement by the firm obtained by Tax Notes acknowledges that IRS personnel “issued an inquiry at our building this morning.”
“We look forward to understanding the government’s queries and we are fully cooperating with them. We expect that when the complete facts are known, this matter will be amicably resolved,” the statement reads.
A video shared on Twitter shows law enforcement agents telling employees to gather any personal belongings before they are escorted out of the building. In the video, the agents tell employees they are welcome to bring their work computers home with them, but that they won’t be able to access the company server.
No arrests were reported by press time.
Ramsey E. Covington, CI special agent in charge of the Houston field office, was appointed to head up that office in January.
